Hinds Feet on High Places
By Hannah Hurnard
Review by Anastasia Fleming

Hinds feet on High Places tells the story of a girl named Much-Afraid, and her journey from the Valley of Humiliation to the High Places

Much-Afraid was lame, and she could not walk very easily. She was ugly to look at because her mouth was deformed and twisted. The Good Shepherd, who guided her on her journey, promised her that she would be transformed when she reached the High Places. He would make her to have Hinds feet, and He would change her name.

On her journey up to the High Places, Much-Afraid encountered many disappointments and hardships. Many times along the way she was tempted to give up and turn back. But all she had to do was call out to the Good Shepherd and He would immediately be there, by her side, to comfort her and help her over the rough parts of her joumey.

This story is a allegory. Much-Afraid's journey to the High Places represents our joumey as Christians through this world of sin, our goal of pleasing our Father in Heaven, and the hope of someday living eternally with Him. Much-Afraid was harassed by her relatives, the Fears, along her journey, in the same way that we will sometimes be taunted by feelings of bitterness, self-pity, and fear, that try to turn us away from the path we have chosen. If we, like Much-Afraid, will just call out to our Lord, He will help us to resist those feelings and rely on Him.

Rebekah's Diary
By Rebekah Pearl
Review by Becky Rees

Rebekah, the oldest daughter of Michael and Debi Pearl, followed God's direction to be a missionary in Papua New Guinea. After much preparation and study, she left America. Arriving in New Guinea, she made her six hour journey on foot, and arrived at the place that would be her "home," at least for a while. She arrived, being the first white person ever to be there. With no support team, or communication with the outside world, she began her journey.

Rebekah starts out her diary on July 9, 1995 and makes her last entry on March 28, 1997. So, as you can see, this happened very recently.

Each day before telling what has been happening she begins with a Scripture that usually applies to how God is ministering to her at that time. It is a real motivation for me to search out the Scriptures so much more than I do, and apply those verses to my life each day, not just some days. There is so much in the Word of God, if we will just reach out and receive it!

To be a missionary, in a place where you are surrounded by tribes that speak a different language, takes a lot of grace and courage, which only God can provide. This book has given me an excitement for the work that is being done in other countries, and a desire to be sent to the mission field. As you read it, I think that you may become excited too.

This book is available for a gift of $4. 00 plus $2.00 shipping and handling. If you cannot make this contribution, they will send you a free copy as the Lord provides.

The Challenge
By "Carolyn"
Review by Alayne Fleming

I would describe The Challenge as a timeless story of love and devotion that is well worth reading.

The novel centers around the relationship of a young girl (age 25) and two suitors. Yet this is more than a story about betrothal. It is a practical guide to a close walk with Christ, for all ages. Woman will learn a lot about being a Titus 2 older woman. Men will learn about how to keep their sons (and selves) accountable for their thought lives, through prayer. Young ladies will learn how to keep their minds, as well as their bodies pure for Christ and, possibly, a future spouse.  Wayward children will be encouraged to get back under their God appointed authority. All readers will be challenged to attack similar trials and circumstances with Godly fervor!

The setting is a horse farm.  The time is now or anytime. The plot is entertaining, yet the theme is Godliness.  Wisdom from the scripture is sprinkled throughout the book. You will be challenged to seek only God's best for yourself and your children as you read this delightful book.

We mothers, who have teenage daughters have been given the key to their hearts and aren't quite sure what to do with it.  This book gives a lot of ideas to talk and pray about as we learn how God will direct our own individual families in the area of courtship and betrothal in the near future.

When you have read this book, please write to Christiana, to let us know how it ministered to you and what you thought about the unusual wedding that occurs. We'll let "Carolyn" know.

This book is available through:
 Zayin Publishing
 P.O. Box 502
 Marshfeild, MO 65706
$9.00 plus $2.00 shipping. Bulk discounts are available.

Ed note: After I read The Challenge, I told my mom that I thought that every Christian should read this book. It is not only a beautiful story of love between two people, it is also a story of love between the individuals, and the Lord. It will challenge you to become more fervent in prayer, and desire a closer relationship with the Lord. I strongly urge you to read this book!  RF

The Crown and the Crucible
By Michael Phillips and Judith Pella
Review by Lindsay Branson

Anna Burenin was happy in her little home in Katyk. Her father and mother worked hard in keeping up the fields and the few animals that they had. However, with the harsh Russian winter just around the comer, and very little in the cupboard, Yevno and Sophia Burenin realized that something drastic had to be done.

They decided that Anna would work as a kitchen servant in the estate of Prince Victor Fedorcenko, one of the most prestigious Russian princes. She would go, but she would take along the two most important things that her family had given to her -- the family Bible, and her faith in God.

Katrina Fedorcenko was used to the life of a Princess. She always got her way, even if it meant slyly talking her parents into it. Katrina had the gift of coyness, and it worked with her mother most all the time, and worked with her father often. She had vigor and was headstrong, probably her best and worst qualities.

The paths of two totally different girls cross, and neither one's world will ever be the same. One was from peasantry, the other of royalty. Anna's faith in God sustains her through all of life's changes, while Katrina drifts about on her ever changing whims. Will Anna's faith affect Katrina?

This is a tale of two girls and their families, and of changing Russia. What will happen? A book about one girls faith makes an uplifting and encouraging tale. An enchanting story, The Crown and the Crucible will delight Christian readers and thrill those who enjoy a story of history, love and a friendship that surpasses hardship.
